School System

Just wondering how the school system is structured in Dubai, if it is similar to our structuring. In the states we generally have grade school (refers to grades 1-8), high school (grades 9-12), and undergraduate college (4-5 additional years of study). Some students are home schooled where they stay at home and their parents act as their teachers. Thanks!

  1. Undergraduate college follows the same structure from what I know, but I certainly can't speak for the grade school and high school system in Dubai. I can talk about my personal schooling experience, though.

I went to a Catholic High School called St. Mary's and there we were educated under the British curriculum. The equivalent of grades 1-6 there was junior 1 to junior 6, then grades 7 until 11 were referred to as senior 1 to senior 5(referred to as 'O' Levels), and grade 12 referred to as 'A' Levels.

In our A levels we can typically chose either one or two subjects to study; in our school it was mainly a choice between science or commerce subjects, with strict limitations (e.g., Either biology or accounts, and not both). There's also the option of taking up a second year of A levels, for the possibility of having four subjects.

From what I know, we graduate high school on finishing our O levels, or grade 11. Because of this, we experienced some confusion when me and my brother were applying for universities in Canada because of the requirement of 12 years of schooling. We ended up taking A levels for a year before applying into AUD finally.

Anyway, that's just my two cents on it. I really can't say anything about the other schools here, hope I helped somehow! :)
