the main thing I took from this movie was that walt had a bad experience with Koreans in the war, this affected his viewpoint towards all asians. He has lived a long time in that house and the neighborhood used to be filled with white people. He has seen his neighbors move away and probalby die, this makes him upset. He uses this as a reason to not like the Hmong in his neighborhood. Walt also take pride in having a nice house and lawn. Since his neighbors do not find this to be important he thinks that they are lazy and have little respect for thier property or nieghborhood. When in fact the reason his neighbors dont take care of thier property is becuase Tao does not have a father to teach him all these things. Then Walt starts to teach him and help him out. Walt starts to enjoy being Tao's mentor. Even late in the movie after he has grown to like Toa he still refers to them using racial slang words. I dont think,he thinks of the racial slang words as being offensive. He was just around people in the war that used words like that so much that he has just become adjusted to talking like that.
