For us students here at Kettering University, we are studying this issues dealing with listening across differences. A common question is, how do you communicate effectively with one from another culture? I think that this movie Gran Torino clearly depicts some of the issues of the situation. Walt the character of Clint Eastwood is a veteran of the Korean War. From his war experiences he carries a mis-conception of who the Hmong people are and their culture. Walt only knows this culture from a war background. Ironically, throughout the movie he learns of new information through his neighbors about their culture. It gave Walt a firm idea of their thoughts. As Walt realizes their similarities he opens up more towards the end allowing a strong relationship to develop and communication through the differences to develop. The relationship emerges well enough that Walt dies for the families freedoms and rights at the end.
On a second note, i from the Michigan area see the depiction the Detroit area very well. Though the scenarios shown do not happen on a daily basis where i am from the do however occur. A very sad way to live if i might say!
